I Watched Ken Burns' The National Parks documentary every night.

Fortunately I also recorded it for the times I cut away to watch Rachel Maddow, the new show Flash Forward and other new programs that had my attention for a while. One thing I came away with besides the magnificent beauty of America is that there was always a huge fight between some incredible conservationists and people that wanted to exploit the lands that were made national parks by different Presidents and Congress over time. Some people wanted to make the territories private property for the enjoyment of the rich, create dams or mining.
The series was a great argument for continuing to make sure the Arctic National Refuge remains free of oil drilling or any other exploitation.
As an obsessed animal lover, I was thrilled to learn about the people that fought for the magnificent wildlife. Unfortunately most bison and wolves were hunted and slaughtered anyway.
Adolph Murie, one of the many great biologists for the National Park Service produced a study on coyotes at Yellowstone that led him to advocate for letting the coyotes live and it so upset the head of the Park Service that he hid it and transferred Murie to Mt. McKinley where he did a similar study of wolves. His work led to the protection of all wolves in Alaska. Wolves had been hunted to extinction in every other park except for Alaska instead of being valuable members on the ecology of our wild areas.
So why is it now okay to kill the wolves in Alaska for bounties and cut off their forelegs as proof to collect?
Ken Burns The National Parks documentary series should be required viewing for every member of Congress and the Senate and most especially the Governors of those states where they make wolf killing a sport, like Idaho and Montana and thanks to the deluded Queen of Mean, Sarah Palin, they can be slaughtered from the air.
