I got an email from the OFFICIAL PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURAL COMMITTEE this week asking me to volunteer for a day of service on January 19th. Since I have not responfed to the multiple requests for a $100 donation for the Inauguration itself, I thought at least I can do this.
I went to the site that listed volunteer activities after putting in my Zip Code. After looking at the list, I decided to help PICK UP TRASH IN FAIRMOUNT PARK. Maybe that seems demeaning to some, but every time I drive by any neighborhood that has lots of trash along the roadway, I always think, "why don't the local residents get together and pick it up?" I guess it is my Feng Shui consciousness of keeping your environment neat and clean but it is also my compulsion to pick up all the debris from the many old trees on our property and pull weeds from my garden beds. I can spend hours on my property and in the garden each week. When I let it go, it really becomes overwhelming - but sooner or later I get it done! Usually in my pajamas after taking out the trash.
I may be limited in my ability to stick it out for the whole seven hours they are asking for, due to my aching knees, but I will come prepared with water and pain killers. When I signed up for this particular activity, I was the only person signing up. Talk about overwhelming, I sure hope there are more volunteers when I get there.
Today I found this Arianna Huffington article regarding January 20th being our own call-to-service Inauguration Day.

We can answer that call to public service in many ways -- by mentoring a child, working in a soup kitchen, picking up trash in your neighborhood park, or by acting as a citizen watchdog, making sure our government is transparent and beholden only to the people (and this includes finding out what happens to our bailout money).
