After appearing at a Republican fund-raiser at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue on Saturday afternoon, the Alaska governor is to drop the ceremonial first puck at the Flyers' regular-season opener at the Wachovia Center.
"We are very excited she has accepted our offer and we are very proud of the publicity she is generating for hockey moms and the sport of hockey," said Comcast-Spectacor chairman Ed Snider, who runs the Flyers.
Last month, after Palin spoke in her acceptance speech about being a hockey mom, the Flyers launched a search for the area's "ultimate hockey mom." The winner will be on the ice with Palin for the faceoff.
Snider attended a reception for the Alaska governor at the Irish Pub in Center City on Sept. 26, the night of the first debate between Obama and Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
In late June, Snider contributed a total of $25,000 to the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee, according to the records of the Federal Election Commission.
But Snider said that Palin's coming to the game "has nothing to do with politics. This is to have some fun with the fabulous statement she made." [Yes, like Barack Obama is a terrorist! Fun? She kills wolves and grizzly bears from airplanes. Fun?] As a rule, professional sports teams do not honor political candidates for fear of alienating their fans.
How about alienating any one that ever knew Ed Snider except his fellow repugs? Who knew he was such a righteous conservative who supports the wingnuts' Freedom's Watch? And a long time follower of Ayn Rand who would probably approve of the idiot bully Sarah Palin.
I just googled Ayn Rand and watched her interviews with Mike Wallace and Phil Donahue. No wonder Ed has left so many wives without conscience. And so many conservatives worship at her feet. I loved Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead but I hate her "Objectivism" philosophy and find it cruel and pitiless. I, too, was once a hockey mom as my daughter Melody played ice hockey as a teenager. I fantasize about facing off against Sarah and kicking her wolf killing ass. Google Ayn Rand and see all of her interviews on uTube. Reading Atlas Shrugged I could not put the book down but it never affected me as it obviously did Ed Snider. I think it gives people cover to be unrepentant, selfish and greedy.
Thank God for the my wonderful friend, the kind, fair, respectful, funny, great speech giver and just as successful a businessman/sports icon as Mr. Ed, who also happens to be a great artist supporting Barack Obama, Steve Sabol.

I was a Hockey Dad.
My daughter Ashley was a winger for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.
Unfortunately, Ashley had inherited my skating talents.
Fortunately, she preferred her original and expensively maintained teeth to the sport of hockey and gave it up after one season. Those 3AM calls about Ice Time at the cross-town rink didn't add much to the over-all experience.
As for tonight's ceremonial Puck drop at the Wachovia Center, or Citi Center, or the Wells Fargo Center (or the future Frozen Pond Center), it will be an historic moment.
Instead of the usual 20,000 Philadelphia fans screaming for the Flyers, they'll be chanting "O-BA-MA."
Our sincerest thanks should go to Ed Snider for arranging tonight's Sold-Out Obama Rally. And the Flyers organ-ize-ation would like you to know that a hockey game will follow the rally.
What a night! The only thing that could be MORE perfect would be for the puck to drop Sarah Palin.
